Northeast Boulder Natural Gas Reliability Project

Xcel Energy is conducting work in Northeast Boulder as part of a periodic review of the system to maintain reliability. This project will include the replacement of a portion of the existing natural gas transmission line, the relocation of a natural gas regulator station and routine testing of transmission lines in the area. The project will allow Xcel Energy to continue to provide safe, reliable service to the Boulder metro area.

Construction will take place along the railroad tracks between Pearl Parkway and the Valmont Power Station, near 63rd Street and Arapahoe Avenue, spanning a little over 2.5 miles. The new regulator station will be located near an existing regulator station at 1900 55th Street in Boulder.

Natural gas service interruptions are not expected. If this changes, we'll communicate directly with you.

FAQS

Xcel Energy is conducting work in Northeast Boulder as part of a periodic review of the system to maintain reliability.

The project will include replacement of a portion of existing natural gas transmission line, relocation of a natural gas regulator station and routine testing of transmission lines in the project area.

This project is located in the northeast portion of the City of Boulder. Work will take place along the railroad between Pearl Parkway and the Valmont Power Station near 63rd Street and Arapahoe Avenue.

The natural gas regulator station will be relocated near an existing regulator station near 1900 55th Street in Boulder, and there may be temporary lane closures in that area during construction. The new regulator station is proposed to be approximately 12'x10' in size.

Regulator stations are a common component of the natural gas system and are essential to ensuring safe and reliable natural gas service. These facilities adjust natural gas pressure to the appropriate level for use in homes and businesses.

This periodic review of the system will allow Xcel Energy to continue to provide safe, reliable service to the Boulder metro area.

Project work may include the following:

  • Temporary lane closures or shifted lanes.
  • Temporary impacts to sidewalks or side yards.
  • Temporary access changes.
  • Traffic control measures like flaggers and signs.
  • Construction noise.
  • Routine testing noise in final phases of the project.

Our goal is to limit inconveniences to you during work.

Xcel Energy will restore work areas to preconstruction conditions.

Service interruptions are not expected during this project. If this changes, we'll communicate directly with you.

Your safety is always top of mind. If you ever suspect a natural gas leak, you should leave your location immediately. Once you are safely away from the area, call 911, then call Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-2999.

It's important to know how to recognize potentially dangerous natural gas leaks. Signs of a leak include:

  • “Rotten egg” or sulfur-like odor. It may smell differently to you, though.
  • Hissing, whistling or roaring noise outside near the natural gas line or inside near appliances.
  • Dirt spraying into the air or continuous bubbling in a creek or pond.
  • Unexplained dead or dying vegetation.

Improper or unauthorized digging near underground utilities is a common cause of natural gas incidents. Prior to digging, call 811 or visit colorado811.org to get help locating and marking buried utility lines.
